WHO WE ARE

Welcome to the Sonic Arts Center at the City College of New York! The Sonic Arts Center offers a four-year, Bachelor of Music (BM) degree with a concentration in Sonic Arts. Our program’s balanced emphasis in music and audio technology create graduates that are highly marketable service providers for today’s competitive music and audio technology industry.

THE POTENTIAL CANDIDATE

We expect that potential candidates to our program possess some previous music and audio technology training/experience and have a small portfolio of creative work. We are looking for students who have a passion for music and audio technology, and can demonstrate that they are creative, musical, and technically adept. If you lack this training/experience then we strongly suggest you gain these skills before you apply to the program. You can only apply to the program twice so it’s important to be totally prepared when you do apply. You can gain this experience/training on your own or through the elective courses offered by the music department here at CCNY.

THE STUDIO EXPERIENCE

Students work in professionally equipped studios with software that is consistently updated as new versions become available. The Center is run like a professional facility, with an in-house technical staff that designs and installs all modifications to the facility, 24/7 access, strict rules of operation that ensure the well being of the Center’s resources, and a smooth transition from one recording session to the next. Aspiring professionals need to train in a facility that is modeled on the professional environment. Hands-on experience is one of the most important aspects of the training provided by any audio and music technology program. For that reason we provide each student with six hours of studio time per week per audio technology course.
